Temperature is the energy signal
A spa holds its warmth by reheating around the clock, so the true water temperature is where energy problems show up first. A steady temperature is efficient: the heater tops up what the insulation loses, nothing more. A sudden drift is an early warning, a heater that is struggling, or a flow problem starving it, and both waste energy long before you would notice by hand.

Chemistry that protects the heater
The second energy leak is slower and quieter. When pH falls too low the water turns acidic and slowly corrodes the heater, pump seals and any metal it touches. When pH climbs too high, calcium falls out of the water as scale on the waterline and inside the plumbing. Neither failure announces itself, the equipment just degrades until it is replaced.
